Perio Protect®

Perio Protect® can be a highly effective, non-invasive treatment option for patients suffering from gum disease. It works by eliminating the bacteria that can form between teeth and gums into the periodontal pocket. Perio Protect® can be used following or in combination with other procedures, including scaling, root planing, antibiotics, and surgical procedures. In some cases, it can be used to help avoid surgery altogether.

Perio Protect® is administered at home by filling a custom-fit Perio Tray™ with prescription medication containing a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide. While treatment duration can vary, most patients wear the tray for 10-15 minutes every day. As this medication works its way below the gum line, it kills bacteria that are thriving in the periodontal pocket. While killing this bacteria is the primary reason for using Perio Protect®, it can also whiten teeth and freshen breath, which are great added benefits to the treatment.

WHAT DOES GETTING Perio Protect® INVOLVE?

If you are a good candidate for Perio Protect®, the process starts with taking impressions of your teeth at our office, which are sent to the Perio Protect® lab to make custom-fit trays. These trays are designed to conform to your teeth and gums so that the medication penetrates beneath your gum line to kill the bacteria.

Once we receive the tray from the Perio Protect® lab, we will then establish a treatment plan for you, which will be based on the seriousness of your gum condition. You will then be sent home with your tray and the medication to begin your daily at-home treatments. The length of treatment will depend on how quickly your gums respond, which we will monitor on an ongoing basis.
